Without supportive resources, the fight against addiction is an uphill battle

To the Editor:

I am a colleague of Carolyn Drennan, the author of the letter about the Malibu Wellness Center.

I worked as the Director of Employee and Labor Relations in hospitals in New York and New Jersey. In that capacity, I authored policies on drug testing of employees in the workplace and had to enforce penalties for violations of those policies. I witnessed firsthand the tragic effects substance abuse had on the lives and careers of professionals and paraprofessionals alike.

Kudos on the coverage you have given to the opioid crisis. The last two issues have raised appropriate concerns, examples of personal experiences and the research being done to address this local and national epidemic.

The person who is a victim of this insidious disease does have to want to get better but, without supportive resources to help, that effort can be an uphill battle.

Sadly, most success stories don't get publicized because of the stigma associated with drug addiction, even for those who have managed to regain control of their lives.

I hope you have the support you need to continue with your efforts.
