How much greater is America today?

To the Editor:

From his campaign until now, Donald Trump has promised to “make America great again.” Is America greater today? A new Gallup survey (http://bit.ly/2BbF8ws) across 134 countries, shows only less than one-third of the world approves of America under Trump, compared to about half of the world under Barack Obama.

As America withdraws from the world stage and as Trump insults the countries of the globe, others rush in to exert their influence over the rest of the world. This includes Russia, France, even India and Israel, and especially China. In Africa, China is building high speed railways connecting major cities, container ports to promote shipping and trade, entire cities to accommodate the growing African population, hydroelectric dams, solar farms, All these massive infrastructure projects could have benefited American companies, but the money is going into Chinese pockets instead. You can be sure that Chinese leaders do not refer to Africa as a “S**Thole.”

Since Trump’s inauguration, the entire world, including all of the Muslim international community, is upset that the U.S., alone among the 200 countries of the world, will recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

The president promised repeatedly to cut the trade deficit with China. But so far this year, it's only growing, up 12 percent in 2017 under Trump (http://cnnmon.ie/2C7cP3b). Our trade deficit is also up with Mexico!

America’s largest trade partners (China, Canada, Mexico, Japan, Germany) all actively sign trade treaties with the rest of the world as America pushes them away. The threat of nuclear missiles striking American soil is now all too real. At international gatherings of diplomats, Americans are sidelined by other countries that are ready to reach out to build friendships, but rebuffed by their US counterparts. These friendships often result in trade growth and prosperity.

There are 7.6 billion customers in this world. In withdrawing within our own borders, America is only going to get 350 million Americans as customers. That does not seem like a path to growth and prosperity.

Yes, the NY stock market is continuing to rise (although slower than under Obama), but I don’t own shares of stock, so this is benefiting those who have money to play not the market, not people like me.

So, from my perspective, America is not getting greater at all.
