The Bernt Balchen Lodge, Sons of Norway, will meet for the first time this year, after taking a winter break in January and February. Their meeting is at the Lackawaxen Fire house, 774 Route 590, Lackawaxen (near Roebling Bridge), on Sunday, March 18, at which time we will celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with a corned beef sandwich lunch, including Irish soda bread, potato salad, etc., at 1 p.m., followed by the business meeting at 2 p.m. In addition, desserts, coffee, and tea will be served.
We welcome back our members and welcome visitors and anyone wishing to become new members of the Sons of Norway. Welcome to join are folks who either have a family background in Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Iceland, or Finland, or just share an interest in Scandinavia. Everyone is welcome to join!
A busy calendar is planned for the year that includes a bus trip to Brooklyn on May 20 to celebrate Norway’s Independence Day, participation in Hawley’s Fourth of July Parade, and a trip to Vasa Park in Budd Lake, N.J., for the annual Scandinavian Fair.
Bernt Balchen’s annual Scandinavian Fair is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 8, at 10 a.m., at the Lackawaxen Firehouse. We will be serving lunch and we welcome everyone to come and enjoy meeting old friends and making new ones while you feast on open-faced sandwiches, etc. The Lodge will be selling Scandinavian cheeses, lingonberry jam, and other foods. Vendors are being sought and anyone interested in becoming a vendor, please call Karen at 908-637-6943 to receive a vendor application.
Save the date for our second annual Oktoberfest Dinner/Dance on Saturday, Oct. 27, at 6 p.m.
A great meal is being planned — we’ll have live music and plenty of desserts!
Bernt Balchen is an active benevolent Lodge. The Lodge provides two $500 scholarships to deserving high school seniors for either an accredited college or a vocational training school. Members also contribute each month to the Good Cheer Food Pantry by bringing non-perishable food to each meeting. Our 50/50 raffle proceeds are donated at the end of the year to worthy charities also.
Come and check us out on March 18 at 1 p.m. for the luncheon!
