“This year we had the team decide captains. Each has been a huge part of our program over their high school career. Although all are different, they share qualities of having the respect of their peers, caring about the team more than themselves and showing good judgment.”
Head Coach Jeff Krasulski

— With the NCAA men’s and women’s tournaments now here in the full force, the fast-paced, highly intense, and very entertaining sport of lacrosse is definitely heating up at the collegiate level.

At the same time, things on the lacrosse field are getting very interesting locally, and for proof of this one needs only attend a game involving the Delaware Valley High School boy’s lacrosse program.

The Warriors are playing at quite a competitive clip this spring with some hard-fought, well-earned victories and losses where they showed grit, determination, and a fighting spirit.

This spring, the Warriors are led not only by a capable coaching staff but a group of leaders — the team captains — who are doing a fine job of rallying their teammates.

The captains for Delaware Valley this year are Anton Mackey, Dan Matarazzo, and Jimmy Quinn, all seniors. Each has made a good impression on head coach Jeff Krasulski.

“This year we had the team decide captains,” Krasulski said. “Each has been a huge part of our program over their high school career. Although all are different, they share qualities of having the respect of their peers, caring about the team more than themselves and showing good judgment.”

Veteran student-athletes on the roster, beyond the three captains, have helped the more youthful players get accustomed to the difficulties of the lacrosse game at the varsity level.

“Our seniors and other experienced players have had critical roles with our freshmen and new players,” Krasulski said. “Anton has taken the face off men under his wing. Dan Matarazzo has mentored our younger left handed players. That's just a few. But we rely on our experienced players passing along the knowledge they have learned to help our younger guys and they have improved greatly.”

Delaware Valley has proven to be a tough opponent for even the most accomplished teams on their schedule.

“Our all sophomore attack unit of Josh Balcarcel, Jackson Melnick and Shane Roche have tremendous chemistry and have stepped up for big seasons so far,” Krasulski said. “Our defensive midfield specialists Dave Bell, Brandon Martin, and Griffen Rhodes do a lot of the dirty work that doesn't show up in the scoring column but is crucial for victory.

“Nash Hamill has developed into a force on both sides of the field as long stick midfielder. Joe Actisdano as goalie and Todd Stager on defense are playing their best lacrosse senior year.”

Editor's note: Delaware Valley has a road game scheduled on May 15 at Minisink Valley.
