— An art walk in February?

"Sure, why not?" says Rebecca Roa, owner of the Frisky Goat Coffeehouse and founder of the Milford Art Walk, now in its second year. "What better way to get people out of their winter doldrums than to have them look at creative, original art featured in all the participating shops, galleries, and eateries in Milford? It’s a celebration of life, love, and art."

This free event takes place from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 23 (the rain date is Feb. 24). There will be complimentary refreshments and an opportunity to meet many of Milford's local artists in each venue (see schedule, below).

The event is hosted by Milford Presents, a cooperative of Milford business owners and a not-for-profit organizations promoting community sustainability through cultural events year-round. This is the same group that organizes Milford's tree lighting, Girls' Night Out, Toast to Milford, and the Milford Music Festival, among other community events.

A frisky hangoutRoa is on the board of Milford Presents, along with Adriane Wendell of Harrington House, Katrina Foster of KKPR Marketing, and Julie Balogh, a Milford resident. An unlikely coffeehouse owner, with a business degree and a professional background in bookkeeping, Roa has embraced the concept of the quintessential coffeehouse as a vehicle for community involvement. And she immerses herself in the Milford community and its arts and music events.

Now in its fifth year, the Frisky Goat has become a place for artists and musicians to hang out, talk, drink coffee, and share their work. In fact, at the end of the art walk day — at about 7 p.m. — the Frisky Goat will present the musical group, Dr. Joe Ferry and The Trip, featuring all kinds of very cool music.

Why is the Frisky Goat frisky?

Roa told a tale handed down through the centuries about a place where the goats were very frisky. The owners found out the goats had been eating coffee beans. So, they got the beans and made themselves some coffee and they, too, became excited and talkative. And so the idea of a coffeehouse as a place for gathering, talking, sharing, and conversing with the locals was born. That spirit is now spreading throughout Milford and the events of Milford Presents.
