"The library was a fundamental aspect of my childhood. I spent a lot of time there when I was little and wanted to give back for all the good times I had there."

Josh Musano is the kind of Eagle Scout candidate every community should have.

His Eagle Scout project is to upgrade the children's room in the Dingmans Ferry branch of the Pike County Public Library. To that end, he is engaged in raising $2,000 to cover the cost of the upgrade.

Presently there is a table with a few chairs for the reading center. Josh has carefully measured the space and, with the assistance of his dad, Peter, carefully drawn up plans on graph paper to create an L-shaped, two-tiered bench that can accommodate more children. It will fit in the corner to the left where the table is now and will be carpeted for comfort.

Josh said the current arrangement is not conducive for storytelling times for the children. He hopes to have the money raised and start construction in the fall.

He expects the project will involve a weekend's work, with the help of his fellow troop members. The troop meets regularly at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church and is open to all.

Before the build, Josh will take down a desk attached to the wall and paint the walls with magnetic paints so the children can play with alphabet letter magnets. The walls will also be decorated with fun, educational decals. Beanbag chairs will be provided so youngsters and sit and read on their own. And last but not least, Josh will be putting in a Nintendo Switch video game system with games.

Help Josh make it happen

Josh has set up a site at GoFundMe.com titled: Eagle Scout Project at Pike County Public Library to raise funds. Or, if contributors prefer, they can make out a check to Boy Scout Troop 1005 and write "children's room upgrade" in the memo line and drop it or cash in the donation jar at the main desk in the Dingman’s Ferry library branch. Josh is also hoping for a donation or price discount on lumber for the project.

Asked why he chose the library, Josh said, "The library was a fundamental aspect of my childhood. I spent a lot of time there when I was little and wanted to give back for all the good times I had there."

Josh still enjoys patronizing the library.

Josh turns 17 in July and will be a senior this fall at Delaware Valley High School. This talented young man taught himself piano and ukulele and enjoys biking in the summer.

In the future, he would like to go to art school to become an animator.
